Invar is a Mac app that takes you from logging your time to getting paid. It handles Canadian sales tax and foreign currencies, and keeps your clients, hours and invoices in one file on your own computer.
Built for Canadian business
Invar started as the tool Waterbay needed to run its own consulting work: clients in Canada and abroad, multiple currencies, and regular sales tax returns to file. It is still the tool we run the business on every day.
It supports the ways consultants bill: hourly rates by client or project and across currencies, fixed fees with the hours tracked to see whether a project is paying off, monthly retainers with optional overage rates, and non-billable admin, sales and internal time.
What it does
- Time tracking. Start a timer from any page, or add time by hand. Week and month views show where every minute went.
- Sales tax handled. GST, HST and PST are calculated from the client’s province, or zero-rated for clients abroad, and shown correctly on a PDF invoice ready to send.
- Invoices across currencies. Bill in CAD, USD or EUR. Each invoice uses the Bank of Canada exchange rate on the day of issue, so your books and your tax return agree.
- Payments. See what’s yet to be billed, what’s outstanding or overdue, and record payments as they arrive.
- Reports. Hours and income by client and project, fixed-fee progress, and the totals for your sales tax return, all exportable to spreadsheets.
- FreshBooks migration. Import clients, projects, time, invoices and payments from FreshBooks, and review everything before it is saved.
Your data stays yours
Invar is an app, not a website. There are no accounts to sign in to and no cloud service holding your records, and it works offline. Automatic daily backups go to a folder you choose, such as iCloud Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or Google Drive. If you stop paying, your copy keeps working.
